School Football Team
Congratulations to the St. Bernadette’s Football Team who participated in Stenhousemuir Primary’s Spring Fayre on Saturday 11th May. This is the first of many tournaments and all participated with great sporting spirit and did the school proud. Well done!
A Message from the Parent Council
The Parent Council would like to say thank you so much for supporting the dress down day today. The children all brought a donation in for the Summer Fayre bottle and tombola stalls and the response we received was incredible. The kindness and generosity has been amazing and we now have lots of prizes for these stalls. Thank you again.

St Mungo’s High School’s Music Festival 2013
One of our P7 girls who plays Annie in the school show entered this competition singing ‘Tomorrow’ from ‘Annie’. We are thrilled to share the news that she came first in the primary schools category. Congratulations!

Artlink Central – Travelling Gallery Spring 2013 Exhibition
Artlink Central is working in conjunction with the Travelling Gallery for one week commencing Monday 1st April. The Travelling Gallery is a bus which has been converted into a touring exhibition space travelling across various venues and schools in Scotland. The Travelling Gallery will be situated at Clackmannanshire Community Healthcare Centre, Sauchie and Forth Valley Royal Hospital, Larbert over 5 days. This is a rare opportunity for local children, families, adults and art groups to visit an exhibition of artworks by established and emerging artists from both home and abroad.
The Spring exhibition includes artists who use a playful, childlike, feel good essence. As part of our marketing campaign we are targeting primary and secondary schools to encourage children of all ages to visit the gallery on site throughout the Easter break. We would very much appreciate it you could add the following details of this event to your school newsletter, website and/or Facebook Page.

1st – 5th April 2013 Spring Exhibition and Tour
Turquoise Heid is a Travelling Gallery exhibition coming to a car park near you. The exhibition will be a busy group show of 8 – 10 established and emerging artists, who work in a broad range of media including drawing, animation, film, sculpture, photography, collage and painting. The exhibition will include artists who use a playful, childlike, feel good essence in their work, sometimes hiding darker depths but more often making us smile. The simplicity and low-tech nature of many of the artworks disguises sometimes complex processes and skills but also makes the exhibition instantly accessible to audiences of all ages.

There are still 5 pairs of free tickets available to watch The Wombles at the Bo’ness Hippodrome on Saturday 2nd February. A few people who won the raffle are either ill or can no longer attend.
The free bus leaves the school at 10 am sharp on Saturday 2nd February and will return to school at approximately 1.30pm. There are fun activities on arrival organised by Jessica Patterson, our Litter Education Officer.
There will be no teacher supervision so please remember that each child must be accompanied by an adult.

Happy New Year to everyone involved with the school. It is hard to believe that we have already had two fabulous terms in St Bernadette’s. Lots of exciting events took place in term one and two such as the opening mass, the opening ceremony, our first school disco, a fashion show, a whole school nativity, visits from Cardinal O’Brien, Poppy Day and Children in Need day. We have lots to look forward to in the coming term too!
The week beginning 14th January 2013 will be ‘Health Week’. During these five days pupils and staff will be focusing on why it is important to be healthy and there will be a variety of activities that promote healthy living. Activities will include streetdancing, fruit tasting, basketball tournaments and a trim trail event. We will take lots of pictures and share them with you
On the 17th-19th January a group of pupils from St Bernadette’s will be taking part in the Young Americans Project. This is a set of masterclasses in acting, singing and dancing preparing children from P4-S6 for a performance on the Saturday night. Good luck to all the children taking part, and as they say in show business, ‘break a leg’!
Drama club will restart on Tuesday 15th January and will return to being an hour long, 3-4pm.

Scottish Education Awards 2013 – Nominations Now Open!
Nominations for the 2013 awards are now open, visit the Scottish Education Awards Website for more information and to submit a nomination.
The Scottish Education Awards celebrate the hard work and success in Scottish Education. They recognise the achievements of people who dedicate their lives to children and young people and showcase the valuable work and innovation in learning environments across Scotland.
Finishing time will be at 1pm on Friday 21st December. School lunch available for free school meals only.

We have reserved seats for this show and we need to pay the box office by the end of this week. The first performance of this year’s Nativity ‘The Magical Christmas Jigsaw’ and the drama club’s Christmas show will take place on Tuesday 11th of December at 1.30pm and the evening performance will be held on Wednesday 12th of December at 7pm. Tickets are still available from the school office at a cost of £2.00 adults/£1.00 Concessions. Please send a note along with payment via your child’s class teacher. The children should arrive at 6.30pm for the evening performance.
Thank you to all the parents, children and staff who attended the family night. This night was a huge success and we raised lots of money for school funds. We would like to thank all of the companies who donated the fabulous prizes.
The school will close for the Christmas holiday on Friday 21st December at 1pm. Bus information will be confirmed later. School lunches will only be provided for children entitled to a free school meal. The school re-opens on the 7th of January 2013.
First 4 Kids breakfast club will run between 8am and 9am from Monday 19th November. Should youwish to send your child to this club, please contact First 4 Kids directly on 671344. Entrance to the breakfast club is via the Community door at the rear of the building Parents are permitted to use the staff car park to drop off children but please remember that the gates to this carpark will not open until 8am.

The school’s official opening was a great success. The children’s performances were wonderful. Many thanks to Mr Cloherty, Mrs Galloway, Mrs Ewing and all of the teachers and support staff who prepared the children. Everyone who attended was very impressed.
It was lovely to see Cardinal O’Brien again - he has a real rapport with the children!

We are having a PJ day on the 16th November 2012. This is to support Blue Peter’s Children in Need appeal. It will cost £1 to wear your pyjamas and there will be a cake sale (bought cakes not home baking). Cakes will cost between 50p-£1.50. We are hoping to have some competitions on this day too. We will keep you updated.

This event was very successful. We had over 70 people attending. They were all very impressed with the school building, the friendly staff and the very smart and polite children who acted as tour guides. Well done P6/7!
A very big thank you to the parishioners of St Bernadett’es Church who provided the home baking and served the tea and coffee.
Children will be able to buy Poppies for a donation from the school throughout the coming week. Thank you for your continued support.

Family Quiz Night
The school and Parents Council are announcing their first fundraiser…….. a family fun quiz night, not to be missed, on Friday 30th November. UEFA Women’s Championships 2011 – 2013
Scotland v Spain European Championship Play-off Saturday 20 October 2012 Hampden Park, Glasgow Kick-off 14.00 hrs.
Message from Sports Scotland
Scotland’s women’s football team have qualified for one of the play-off matches and are in contention to qualify for the UEFA Women’s Finals in Sweden 2013. They have a home and away game against Spain in October, the winner of the play off will go direct to the Finals in Sweden.
Entry to the match will be free at the turnstiles, they need as big a support as we can possibly muster, we would ask that everyone invited is asked to bring their family and friends – the more people we have at Hampden the better the atmosphere we create for the team!
There will be many activities organised around the game on the day, so there will be great opportunities for your young players to participate in some of the activities which will happen outside and around the stadium.
This will be the first time the women’s national team have played at Hampden Park, it is a huge venue and we would like the as many school pupils and their families to come and support the team!
We would respectfully urge you to promote this opportunity to the young people involved in your programmes to come and get behind our National Coach, Anna Signeul and the team as to qualify for Sweden would have a fantastic impact for the game!

Forming a Parent Council
Diane Cherry from Falkirk Council will advise us about forming a Parent Council and writing a constitution.
We will provide an overview for parents and explain homework related to this.
Bug Club Reading Scheme
Information for parents on the school’s reading scheme.
This session will be repeated on Wednesday 26th September from 1:30 to 3:00pm for those parents who cannot attend the evening session.
I would urge all parents/carers to attend one of these sessions as it will give you a greater understanding of the school’s literacy programmes and help you support your child/children at home. We will have a similar session for numeracy.
Family Quiz Night – Cancelled
This was originally planned for Friday 21st September. We feel that this is not giving us enough time to get this event properly organised. We therefore, plan to postpone this until October/November. Another date will follow.
A Visit from Cardinal O’Brien
Cardinal O’Brien and lots of special invited guests came to St Bernadette’s to mark the opening of the school by celebrating Mass.
Our fabulous school library was opened by The Etherington Brothers on the 24th August 2012. They did a fantastic assembly for the children and then cut the ribbon to officially open our library.

Opening day was very exciting for children, parents, staff and the community. The children looked very smart in their new uniforms and were very excited to start in their new school. - All staff will be involved in preparation for learning and teaching. There will be no opportunity to collect or purchase uniforms in the morning.
Tuesday 21st – Open Session
Parents, children, family, friends and member of the local community are welcome to visit the school between 1:30 and 3:00pm. This will be an open visit; feel free to have another look around the school. Staff will be on-hand to answer any questions you may have.
Children – Visit the dining room to sample school meals. Your Mums and Dads can pick up a copy of the menu.

Day One arrangements
Parents should bring their children to the school hall for 9:30 on the first day. The children will be taken directly from the hall to their classrooms. Parent, Grandparents etc. can return to collect the children and to take some pictures at 12:00.
P2 to P7
Parents/carers should bring the children into the playground for the normal 9am starting time. The children should line-up in their class groups; these will be clearly marked. Parents and carers are welcome to remain in the playground until the children are collected by the teachers and taken to their classes. I would ask that you put the children into their line and then stand back. We will have a few surprises to welcome the children to the school on their first day.
If the weather is very wet then we will gather the children in the hall.
Drop-off and Parking
We are very lucky to have ample parking and drop-off provision. To ensure our children are safe and that we avoid congestion and disruption to local traffic, parents should ensure that they follow the one-way system and only park in authorised parking bays. Parents should not use the staff car park and should never park in the bus bays. We hope to have help from the Community Police on the first day.
We will have an automated system set up in the school but this will not be ready until September.
School Meals cost £1:70 per day.
We would ask that, when possible, parents pay for one week (£8:50) each Monday
Children will have the choice of:

If you have made arrangement for after-school care then please complete the following form and return this to the school office before the start of term.
If your child will be travelling on either of the school buses then please complete the following form and return it to the school before the start of term.
Additional closure day – 21st August
As you know the Scottish Government has given us one extra day to prepare for the school’s opening. We still plan to have an open session from 1:30 to 3pm. During this session children can have another look around the school and visit their teachers, who will be in the classrooms. Catering services will provide menus and samples of school meals. I will also answer any last minute questions you may have.
I will provide additional information about the first few days of nursery/school over the next couple of days so please keep checking the blog.

UniformI have set out times above when parents can come in and collect or buy kilts, jumpers, cardigans, ties, badges and scrunchies . Please bring the correct money or pay by check – we will not have any change in the school at this time.
We do not hold a stock of polo shirts, t shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, PE kits or bags. These can still be ordered online at: www.border-embroideries.co.uk
If you have kilts, jumpers or cardigans that do not fit then we will try our best to change these for you on Thursday afternoon with the stock we have left. If we don’t have the size you require we will have to order additional stock. Please remember we cannot exchange the polo shirts etc. as we don’t have a stock of these. These items will have to be returned to Trutex.
Change of Shoes
Please provide a pair of trainers or gym shoes that children can keep in school? Children will be expected to change their outdoor shoes when they are in school.

School and Nursery Uniforms
The uniforms will be delivered tomorrow. I will post times for week beginning 13th when you can collect your orders or buy items. Parent who are coming for a tour tomorrow evening can pick up their order at the end of the tour. We won’t, however, be set up for selling any items at this point.
To ensure that we have the correct information for children who require medication I would ask any parent whose child requires medication to come to the school on:
- Monday 13th 9:30 to 11:30
- Tuesday 14th 9:30 to 11:30.
We will ask you to complete a medical form and to provide us with the medication your child requires. If your child suffers from asthma I would ask that you provide the school with a spare inhaler.
We want to ensure we have correct contact details for all children at the start of the term. If your telephone number has changed since you completed your enrolment form or if you have not yet completed a new enrolment form for St Bernadette’s, please provide us with the following information:
- Child/children’s name and class
- Parent/carers telephone numbers
- Name and telephone numbers for two emergency contacts

I am continuing to enrol children and as a result the numbers in classes are changing. I will now have to make a change in the middle school. There will now be a:
- P3 – 17 pupil Teacher – Miss Baker
- P4/5 – 21 pupils (7 at P4 and 14 at P5) – Teacher Miss Allan
All other stages remain the same although some of the class sizes have changed slightly.
I understand that this will mean a change of teacher for the P4 pupils but this has been unavoidable as we would have only had one space left at the P3/4 stage.

The school will be open between 1pm and 2pm tomorrow (Thursday) to allow parents and children to have a tour of the school. We will be starting the tours every 15 minutes from 1pm on Thursday. We will repeat this on Friday 3rd from 11am .
I have had an update from Trutex and they expect to have the uniform orders to us some time next week. I will let you know when they have arrived.

July 29th – Update
Great news the school has officially been handed over to the authority. If you would like to come in for a look around then please come at one of the following times:
Thursday – 2nd August 1pm until 2pm
Friday 3rd August 11am until 12noon
I will post two sessions for the next three weeks. Please do not come outwith these times as we have a lot to do to make sure we are ready for the start of term.
July 22nd – Update
Work is continuing in the school. The builders are leaving on Friday 27th July. The classroom furniture is now in place and resources are arriving daily.
I know that some of you who have ordered some items on-line have received them but I do not expect to the the special orders (kilts, knitwear, ties etc) for a few weeks yet. As soon as the orders come in I will telephone parents directly and post a message on the blog.
The teachers will be allowed into the building from Monday 30th July. As soon as we have had some time to unpack resources and get things organised I will the post times when you can pop in for a look around. We will be very busy so I will have to limit this to specific times. I would ask that you do not just arrive at the building. I know you are desperate to have a look but I would ask for your patience just a bit longer. The important thing is that we are organised and ready to welcome the children at the start of term.
I will continue to update progress and provide additional information as we get closer to the start of the new term.
There has been damage to a cable in Falkirk so we don’t yet have our phone line but hopefully this will be resolved very soon.

The results of the school blog competition have been announced. We didn’t win but once again many thanks to everyone who voted for us. Next year….!
Thank you to parents and children for your enthusiastic reponse to our meeting on Wednesay evening. It was great to see most of the children together for the first time. A big thank-you to all of the staff who came along to meet the children. They are all busy in their current posts and they have given freely of their time to meet with me in the evenings.

Lots of news this week – all good!
Our blog has been shortlisted.
A panel of judges will now choose a winner from the final ten shortlisted blogs. Thanks to everyone who voted for us.
The blog has been an excellent way to keep in touch and involve parents and children as we prepare for the opening of our new school in August. Mr Cloherty added a visitor counter to the blog on the 6th of June and we have had over 2400 visitors in the past ten day!
More good news.
The authority has approved my request for additional equipment/features in the outdoor area. As a result we will now have:
- An adventure trail with a tunnel, scramble net, wobble board and much more!
- A large sandpit
- A wildlife garden – Falkirk Woods are helping us to access a fallen tree for this area.

The P1 to P7 children will spend time in class with their teacher and I will update parents on some of the resources we are purchasing for the school. Thank you to Kinnaird Primary for allowing us to use their school.
Our First School Mass
I am delighted to report that Cardinal Keith O’Brien is visiting St Bernadette’s on Friday 7th September. The Cardinal will bless the school and celebrate Mass with us.
Cannon Urquhart has very kindly written the lyrics of a school hymn to St Bernadette. A friend of mine, Mr Billy McCreery, is currently writing music to go with the lyrics.
Official School Opening
This will take place in November and I am delighted to tell you that the Cardinal has agreed to return to the school for this occasion.
Tempest photography will visit the school on Thursday 30th August. They will take a whole school and nursery picture as well as individual pictures of the children.
I visited the school on Friday and it is looking great! I will add some photographs to the ‘picture’ page. The builders will handover the school to the authority on 29th June.

‘The Young Americans’ Project
An exciting project called ‘The Young Americans’ is going to be available to children aged seven and over in Falkirk schools next session. This music, dance and performing project has never taken place in Falkirk Council before and has rarely been available in Scotland.
One of the councils drama specialists, Mrs Donaghy has arranged for ‘The Young Americans’ to come to the council to offer workshops for the children in our schools. The workshops will take place over a series of three days on the 17th, 18th and 19th January 2013.
Over the course of three days ‘The Young Americans’ lead workshops with the children in singing, dance and performance arts and then at the end of the final day there is a performance for parents, relatives and friends to watch.

Applications can be handed into either Kinnaird Primary School or St Francis Primary School where they will be uplifted by Mrs Donaghy. More details about this can be found in the attached letter.

A transition meeting for all pupils P1 to P7 will now take place on Wednesday 20th June in Kinnaird Primary from 6pm to 7pm. The format for the meeting will be:
Parents and children will meet in the hall
The children will then go to a classroom with their teacher
Parents will remain in the hall and I can give some last minute updates and answer any of your questions. Please let me know if there is anything specific you would like me to address at this meeting

Many thanks to all of you who have left comments. The general agreement seems to be to postpone the fundraising event but to procede with the meeting to allow the children to meet their teachers. As a result I will organise an evening session to allow the children to spend some time with their teacher.
I will bring this meeting forward from 27th June and arrange it for the week beginning 18th June. I will post more details before the end of the week.
Thank you for you patience and understanding. It is unfortunate that we cannot get into the school but I can assure you it will be worth the wait!
I met with all of the staff today. They too are disappointed that our planned meeting in the school cannot now take place.
I will be working during the summer and I will post detail on the blog of when I will be in school so that parents can pop in with the children and have a quick tour.

*I am very pleased to welcome Gillian to the staff. She is currently teaching in St Mary’s Bo’ness and will have a one-year post in the school. I will ask Gillian to add some details onto the staff page.
Mr Cloherty will take responsibility for the following:
- Nursery teacher – 2 days per week
- Support for Learning (Including support for more able children) – 2 days per week
- Additional responsibilities – 1 day per week

All staff had a visit to the school on Friday. Everyone was excited and impressed with the building.
- The next meeting planned for 27th June cannot be held in the school. I have spoken to the site manager and architects and they have both said that this will now not be possible as there will still be workers in the building until the 29th June. This is disappointing but the appropriate certification would not be in place to allow safe access.
- The Scottish Government have awarded the extra closure day on Tuesday 21st August. The school will be open from 1pm to 3pm to allow parents and children to come in for a tour and to meet up with their teacher.
Please leave your comments and opinions on the follow options for the meeting planned for 27th June 2012
- Have the children/parent’s meeting as planned on June 27th but hold this in St Francis. There is the option to make this a family fundraising event but some parents I have asked feel that this is too near the end of term for such an event.
- Postpone the fundraising ‘Family Gameshow’ event until the beginning of the next term but have the parents’ meeting as planned on the 27th June in St Francis
- Cancel any meeting on 27th June as it is too near the end of term
I would appreciate you thoughts on all of the above.
Transition Plans until the end of June:
- Miss Savage and I will visit all children in their nursery on week beginning 11th June.
Primary Two to Primary Seven
- I have already met the children transferring from St Francis Xavier’s but I will visit children who are coming from different schools also on week beginning 11th June.
- I will be gathering pupils records for all pupils
- All children will receive a letter giving them the date of their induction visit and starting date. These will be sent out before the end of term.

Other news -
If you know anyone who has been having difficulty accessing the blog can you please ask them to try again. There was apparently a problem with anyone who uses Sky as their provider but this has now been resolved.
I will upload the uniform order forms onto the uniform page later this week. I will also place some hard copies in St Francis Primary so that parents can access them there too.
The staff are going for their first look around the school on Friday afternoon we will take lots of pictures.

Good news! The authority has approved an additional teacher to enable me to reconfigure the classes. The revised class structure will now be:
P1a 18 children
P1b 18 children
P2 14 children
P3/4 21 children (14, P3 children and 7, P4 children)
P5 15 children
P6/7 8 children
This is excellent news and means we will still have space for any other children who move into the area.

I met with Rhona from ‘First 4 Kids’ she has given me an update on numbers of children who will use the service.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday – 6 children
Thursday and Friday – 3 children
Rhona has said that if we can get 10 children each night from Monday to Thursday, then it would be financially viable for her to set up in the school. If you have not indicated to Rhona that you need after-school care then please give her a call on 01324 671344. If any parents of children coming into P1 require after-school care then please call Rhona as soon as possible. Please remember that, even if we don’t have enough demand to set up in the school in year one, there will still be provision. The children would be collected and taken to Stenhousemuir Primary. Lets hope we can get the numbers up to ten!!!
